TOMS Fans Doing Well With Doing Good - Hannah

“I highly respect what TOMS stands for, and have a new awareness and passion for the movement after spending time in Guatemala.” – Hannah
Hannah is a student at Boston University. She’s studying International Relations, and passionately interested in sustainable community development. This past summer, she traveled to San Andrés Itzapa, Guatemala as part of a program focused on teaching conversational English and creating a sustainable community from the ground-up with education, and distribution of food and care packages to the children’s [students’] grandparents. She and her peers also worked with their program to support a local women’s group.
”I wanted to share this photo with the TOMS community…to convey my experience in Guatemala, give an idea of the community I worked in, and encourage people to help others in whatever way they can.”
Hannah told us…
I decided to bring my TOMS shoes not only because they are the most versatile, comfortable shoes I own, but also because I wanted to raise awareness for another great cause while I was abroad and in a position to educate others.
One of the main things I noticed in my classroom was the fact that many children didn’t have clothes or shoes that fit them well, and what they did have was old and often torn or damaged. This heightened my understanding of the importance of the giving that TOMS does with its One for One model, providing shoes specifically intended for each child who receives a pair.
I’m most inspired by the simplicity behind the good TOMS does. A pair of shoes can completely change a child’s life. TOMS enables so many people to help in a profound way.
Simple idea; serious importance.
Volunteerism and the need to give back gave me an experience that truly changed my life and motivated me to make changes in others’ lives, an idea that I feel is deeply embedded in the One for One movement. I hope that others will take the initiative to do good too.
