In Movember TOMS, they walked through a victory against cancer
Around this time last year, Tracey Solomon went about her day, making a digital pit stop to check a TOMS email that alerted her the 2011 Limited Edition Movember TOMS Shoes were available for purchase.
She loved TOMS, was new to what Movember stood for, liked the shoes, but wasn’t in the market for a new pair to add to her (pretty hefty) TOMS collection that day. So, she closed her e-mail with some new learnings about a rad organization and collaboration, working to change the face of men’s health.
But in the week before those TOMS sold out, Tracey’s story and the TOMS x Movember story began to merge.
“About a week and a half after I got the ‘new Movember styles’ e-mail from TOMS, we got a call from my husband’s primary care physician that he needed to come in right away,” Tracey said. Shortly thereafter, her husband Kyle, 45, was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“We’re not old. This was not on our radar,” Tracey explained her mindset and course of action just before Kyle went in for the biopsy that confirmed his cancer. “But all of a sudden men’s health issues were very real to us. I placed my first order for the Movember TOMS and got us matching pairs. I figured, if nothing else, this would be a way to help other people get through this.”
In the 10 days since Tracey learned – through TOMS - that Movember provides support and advocacy to communities and causes built around men’s health, her family became part of those who would directly benefit from those efforts.
“We were going to walk through this journey with peace and hope, and we weren’t going to do this alone. Our Movember shoes were going to be a symbol of that,” Tracey declared.
“We wore [those TOMS] to that first biopsy appointment, throughout the process that led us to Kyle’s prostatectomy, all the way up until a week and a half ago, when the physician told us Kyle is cancer-free.”
