In her green hospital gown, 6-year-old Sarose waits patiently beside her father for Dr. Salma KC Rai to post-operatively examine her eye.

Just a few weeks ago while she was playing, Sarose tripped and fell, hitting her left eye hard on a stick. Her eye has been red and swollen since, and after taking her to the local doctor in their village in India, Sarose’s father received the recommendation for an eye care specialist at the Lumbini Eye Care Institute in Nepal

Their journey to the clinic was a long one. Sarose’s father packed a few belongings and boarded the bus with his daughter for the five-day trip across the border to Nepal. He took time off of work, though he knew it would affect the family’s income, but their trek ended successfully, arriving at Dr. Salma’s expert services for Sarose.

Now at Lumbini, the two greet Dr. Salma, who comes to remove Sarose’s bandage. Everything is healing well, but the doctor asks them to stay one more day to watch for any possible infections. The next day, the prognosis is good. As the doctor explains the follow-up care to her father, Sarose begins to smile and laugh once again. And as they leave the clinic, Sarose looks at Dr. Salma and waves a big goodbye.

With every pair of TOMS Eyewear you purchase, we help one visually impaired person regain his or her sight — by providing prescription glasses, medical treatment or a needed surgery. Sarose is one of thousands of individuals receiving sight-restoring treatment because of the services made possible by the One for One movement.
