After snoozing my alarm two or six times, I get out of bed blurry and bleary eyed. I put on my glasses to fix the blur and make a strong cup of coffee to combat the blear. A Summer at TOMS: Part One

July 3rd, 2014 by TOMS

Summer internships are a major component in the lives of young professionals worldwide. Companies often task very specific individuals with large responsibility. As applicants, you want to learn. You want to contribute. You want to soak up as much culture and connection as possible. For nine individuals hailing from eight states, TOMS became the site of our summer internship. And from the moment we entered the door, we knew we were in store for the job of a lifetime.

tominterns

Every facet of TOMS is represented within the building. The walls are adorned with bright colors and rustic patterns. Meeting rooms are named after countries that recall the company’s giving trips. Between presentations and meetings, employees challenge one another to ping-pong and take advantage of the massive slide from the top floor to the bottom. This is a work hard, play hard environment, and we were so ready to get rolling.

Our first few days were met with a whirlwind of information and introductions, a highly immersive launch program that allowed us to meet individuals within each department. We learned about the origins of One for One® and its foundational place in the TOMS business model. Marketing and development teams explained the ever-evolving product line and the inspiration for many of the styles. Above all, we got a grasp for how day-to-day life unfolds inside the office.

There is a holistic emphasis on collaboration within the TOMS culture. With a variety of prior experiences under our belts, our mentors and managers have encouraged us to share our skill sets in unified effort, as all have so much to learn from one another. Everyone here believes in this movement, and is truly excited to see the progression of the brand, its products, and the evolution of the give.

Though TOMS is still a relatively young company, there is already so much history ingrained in the (literal) fabric of the brand. While we have been exposed to the many components to the product line, a major emphasis remains on the value of giving. Highlighted in giving trips but underscoring every business decision, the One for One® movement is the foundation of TOMS. Through a variety of presentations and meetings, our Tribe was exposed to continual excitement that giving provides to every employee.

Complimented by a Style Your Sole event and a Friday evening Happy Hour, our first week at TOMS was an incredible introduction to the company and the value we will contribute over the summer. We can’t wait to see what’s coming next!
