The Last-Mile Contribution

At TOMS, we take our commitment to giving shoes seriously. Our Giving Department works hard to send custom, made-to-order shoes to fit the needs of all of the diverse communities in which our Giving Partners work. We’ve learned that our Giving Partners put a significant amount of resources into distributing new TOMS Shoes to the children who need them most. And while some of these valued resourced are priceless — like relationships and trust within communities they serve — others can come with new, tangible expenses that make shoe distributions more difficult. To help ease the challenges and offset the…

Profiles in One for One Safe Water

Name: Cristina Age: 15 years old Location: Santa Cruz del Quiche, Guatemala Type of water project: Gravity-fed water system with pump For 15-year-old Cristina, water has always been a precious commodity in her home. Since she was a little girl, her parents would purchase water for household use, and ration it out because it was a major expense for her family. At 5 Quetzales (the Guatemalan currency) per jug, her parents would often have to buy four or five jugs per day just to support their family of 11. “We use the water to cook, wash clothing and for personal…

Sustainable sanitation initiatives in Guatemala

In Guatemala, recent reports share that 94% of Guatemalans have access to clean water sources and 80% have access to sanitation facilities. While these statistics might seem impressive at first glance, the reality is that many of these water systems have partially or completely failed. TOMS Giving Partner Water For People and TOMS Roasting Co. purchases are helping to change this. In Guatemala, TOMS works with Water For People to support projects that improve sanitation facilities and hygiene practices. Recently, in a school district in the department of El Quiche, Yohana García Urizar, president of the School Parent Teacher Committee…

Safe Water in Malawi

The natural dissipation of continuous, pure water disrupts more than just an everyday routine. In Malawi, when one village’s main river began to dry up, mothers and children were forced to spend hours every day searching for water and the entire community experienced a decline in safety, good hygiene and well-being. TOMS Roasting Co. partners with Water For People to provide sanitary water and education in the countries from where we source our beans. After working with Water For People, several villages in Malawi have the support they need for sustained access to safe water, and the tools and knowledge…

The Pledge for Safe Water in Peru

The pledge to provide safe water worldwide happens in a variety of ways. In Cascas, Peru, a local school participated in a program about the importance of sanitation. Led by TOMS Giving Partner Water For People, local community members were educated about sanitation and proper hygiene – critical aspects on investing in safe water infrastructures. Upon completion of the training, the school was certified as a “healthy school,” and the community empowered for generations to come. TOMS Roasting Co. partners with Water For People to provide sanitary water and education in the countries from which we source our beans. While…

But for a long time I’ve wondered, could we become a global Giving company in something other than the fashion and lifestyle business? Now, I can give you a definitive answer:…
