Giving TOMS Shoes in the DRC

They call themselves “Makers of Things assorted;” we call them amazing. Over the course of the last year, Australian artists (and twins) Maricor and Maricar Manalo have woven their story into the greater TOMS narrative, most recently with the this month’s 12 Days of Giving campaign.
Here are just some of the reasons we’re stoked to share the movement with them…
Faced with the prospect of wearing her ill-fitting, used shoes, Roslelor preferred to go barefoot — putting this 11-year-old, Haitian girl at risk for injuries and soil-transmitted infections. But when she received her first brand-new pair of shoes (a pair that actually fit) from TOMS and IMA World Health, she was happy to wear them. “I will wear them to school,” Roslelor gladly explained. Combined with medical treatment provided by IMA, the shoes are an important line of defense against disease.
Roslelor is just one story. With your help and the work of our Giving Partners, TOMS is now giving shoes in more than 50 countries around the world!
How do we give when you buy TOMS apparel and accessories? Each item — whether it’s a hoodie, Tee or journal — fulfills the One for One promise. With every purchase, we give a pair of new SHOES to a child in need.
And let us introduce the man behind this hoodie…
Sevag (pictured above) is our Apparel & Accessories Designer and Developer at TOMS. If you’ve ever ordered a TOMS Tee or anything of the like, he’s the one who got that made.
In 2011, Sevag went on a TOMS Giving Trip that keeps him continually thinking of the Giving side when he dreams up what he’s putting on that sweatshirt you just might pick up.
Sevag’s a pretty sage dude, too, and always greets people - friends ands strangers alike - with a great smile or fun quip about the adventures in his life. Fun fact: besides being a great Giving trip volunteer in Honduras, on the home front Sevag’s a DJ and a traveler who brings rad equipment on the go. Get to know Sevag a little better by taking a peek into his bag.
One purchase means two pairs
Gugu is an optimistic, 12-year-old schoolgirl who lives in South Africa, with her grandmother and sister. With the help of Giving Partner Sesego Cares, Gugu received a new pair of TOMS — replacing shoes that she had outgrown and were hurting her feet. “When I got my TOMS hoes, immediately I felt comfortable and my walk to school is easier now.” This eager student aspires to go into law and take care of her grandmother when she grows up.
Teaching teachers about vision
With the support of TOMS Eyewear and our lead Sight Giving Partner, Seva Foundation, the Lumbini Eye Institute in Nepal has been showing local teachers how to screen for potential eye issues. Often educators are the first to notice vision problems when kids have difficulty seeing the blackboard. Now, nearly 200 teachers can properly diagnosis visual impairments and refer a child to a local eye center for treatment — as part of Lumbini’s efforts to create long-term, self-sustaining treatment programs.
