Over the course of the Fall, we’ve taken you on a tour of Peru with Giving Partner Buckner International. We’ve shared stories and images from the field about Buckner’s programming and intimate thoughts from the TOMS Giving Trip team throughout their journey. Now, we hear first-hand from Claudia Leon, the executive director of Buckner, on why she feels her work is so important and how TOMS plays an integral role in Buckner’s humanitarian aid programs.
Though not the primary way we give TOMS Shoes, giving trips are one of the TOMS family’s favorite perks of our work here. After certain checkpoints of working for the company and to extend the movement, we get a pretty amazing experiential gift: that of joining a TOMS Giving Partner to distribute shoes to children on the Giving side of One for One.
While visiting Buckner in Peru, the Giving Trip team learned how art plays a huge role in a child’s development. “Art, in general, helps kids to be aware of what things are around them. They can express and learn in a healthy way,” Buckner’s Giuli shared. Aside from using art forms as a tool to teach healthy habits like hand-washing and wearing shoes as Giuli does in her puppet shows, art also offers children a creative outlet of expression and a sense of self-esteem and ownership. Giving Trip participant — Maricor, a textile artist from Australia — wanted to hone in on her artistic talents to work with and leave behind something special for the children of Buckner. Read on to see how she helped transform a plain white wall into a masterpiece.
“What we want from this community is not to change them; it’s to make them realize how important they are.”
