I am my own art director: by Allie G at TOMS HQ

I once read or heard someone say, “life is one giant editorial.” And while I wish that meant I was constantly flanked by Beckham-esque underwear models - let’s be honest: where is the inspiration in that?
But in actual my day-to-day, I do see colors and outfits and giant magazine spreads calling out to me everywhere I go. When I go to the beach with my friends, I envision a 1950s beach party with everyone in high waisted bathing garb (and lifeguards doing the monkey). I make my boyfriend take pictures of me jumping in fountains repeatedly until I have the perfect splashy splashy shot (and my clothes are soaking wet). I make dinner reservations based on the patio lighting, and when I know we’ve got the table with the right kind of soft light, I talk my friends out of white clothes and into bright colors. OK, fine. I might not be that extreme but, generally, I see the places I go as a dramatic backdrop for a grand photoshoot that is my daily life.
And though that may invite some drama and definitely gave my parents a nice run-around growing up, I think that lens is pretty valuable one to have because I find inspiration for creativity all over the place. Now, working at TOMS on the Social Media team, I can thank this modern world we live in for helping me find a home for the color and effect I carry around. I am able to capture it via Instagram, camera, old-school Polaroid, or some other tool that pops up, and filter it to make it look old, sharp or stamped with hearts.

I am my own art director.
In my dream world, I am Norma Jean Roy. I spend my days on very glamorous ELLE magazine sets prepping for lavish photos with high-fashion models, draped in exquisite couture. But in the now, I am having a real-life, grounded, hard-working, hard-playing, grand old time styling up my friends in different TOMS styles – like the new Tomboy boots, hopping fences and finding set by cool graffiti walls or random, quirky spots around HQ.

Ah, inspiration.

Put It All To Use
Nothing is too difficult and nothing is too complicated. Nothing is out of reach, and nothing is too outrageous.
Life is what it is, and you have the immense good fortune of being here, right now, to live it. So instead of working to place judgments on it, go ahead and live it.
Sure, some tasks are highly complex, and others demand large amounts of effort and commitment. The good news is that those are precisely the kinds of things you’re so very good at.
It is indeed a blessing that life can be so demanding. After all, that’s what gives life so many great and fulfilling possibilities.
Step up and claim the most valuable of your own amazing possibilities. Feel those good things that resonate most with you, and joyfully bring them to life.
You have great power, purpose, and ability. Choose in this moment, and again and again, to put it all to meaningful and effective use.

“The more you read, the more things you will know…”
The 1st of January each year encompasses a kind of energy that inspires us to try new things, revive our schedules, and think BIG. But a similar energy comes from reading a good book, don’t you think? You turn to the last page, sigh, release, and think a little bit differently about the world than when you started. In that spirit, we’ve gathered a list of good reads from across the TOMS family to awaken your inner bookworm and fill that energy year round.
